No need to temper aggression, captains say before Pakistan-India Asia Cup clash

Pakistan vs India: Captains Back Aggression Ahead of High-Stakes Asia Cup Clash in Dubai

Pakistan captain Salman Agha and India’s Suryakumar Yadav made it clear that neither side will ask their players to tone down aggression when the two arch-rivals meet in a much-anticipated Asia Cup encounter in Dubai this Sunday.

This will be the first cricketing showdown between the two nations since the brief military conflict in May, adding a heightened geopolitical backdrop to the contest.

Despite political tensions, players from both teams have traditionally shared cordial off-field relations. Yet, when asked if they would advise teammates to keep emotions in check, both captains dismissed the need for such instructions.

“You don’t need to say anything to any player because every individual is different,” said a calm-looking Salman during the pre-tournament media session in Dubai.

“If someone wants to be aggressive, they are welcome to do that. Fast bowlers, in particular, thrive on aggression—you can’t take that away from them. As long as it stays within the field, I have no issue.”

Indian skipper Suryakumar Yadav echoed similar sentiments.

“Aggression is always there when we take the field. Without it, you can’t really play this sport. I’m really excited to step out and compete,” he said.

The Asia Cup trophy was unveiled on Tuesday by ACC President Mohsin Naqvi, alongside all team captains, ahead of the tournament opener between Afghanistan and Hong Kong.

While India enter the tournament as defending T20 world champions and firm favourites, Pakistan come in with strong momentum after defeating Afghanistan in the final of a recent tri-series in the UAE.

India, on the other hand, haven’t played T20 internationals since their home series against England in February. Still, Suryakumar dismissed concerns over lack of match practice.

“If your preparations are good, you walk onto the field with confidence. Yes, we’re playing after a gap, but we’ve been here for three-four days and spent valuable time together as a team. We’re ready and looking forward to the challenge.”

With the stage set in Dubai, Sunday’s clash promises not just world-class cricket but also the intensity and emotions that only an India-Pakistan contest can deliver.
